''Lets get married.''Pairing(s): Bakugou Katsuki / Kirishima Eijirou Word count: 1700 WARNINGS FOR: Manga spoilers, mentions of death, panic attack post-war krbk hurt/comfort for the soul bc i need them to be soft and gentle w each other once everything's over :( (also big thanks to Mildlyannoyedscroundrel on ao3 for proofreading!), “Let’s get married.” A single red eye blinks tiredly. “Ei, we’re in high school.” The rare use of his first name by Katsuki –a nickname, no less– doesn't bring a smile to Eijirou's face. The corner of his mouth doesn't twitch upward, his shoulders don't lose any of their tension, his gaze remains painfully vacant. “No,” he murmurs in the small space between their faces, "we aren't. We've been fighting an active war for most of the year so far. We haven't been in an actual classroom in months." His hand –resting on Katsuki's chest as if to make sure his heart doesn’t stop beating– starts to twitch nervously. Distantly, Katsuki wishes he could hold it, but even though only one of his hands is uselessly stuck in a cast, the other isn’t nearly strong enough to force its way out from the warm space between their bodies. "We watched cities get destroyed and people– people died, and you–" His breathing hitches as his eyes –glassy with panic– meet Katsuki's exposed one. "You almost– we’re supposed to be safe now but every time we part it feels like I won’t see you alive again and I just– I’m losing my mind.” Tremors turn the edges of his frame into a blur; his hand leaves Katsuki’s chest aching and unprotected, flies up to hide his face as he struggles to breathe. “Everything is fucked up,” he wheezes and, god, doesn’t Katsuki know it. “And it isn’t– a solution, or– or a guarantee or something, I know– it’s just– selfish, and childish, but I–” “Ei–” “I wanted to live a life without regrets, but if we died right now I'd spend the rest of eternity regretting not saying anything." His words come out in a panicked rush, barely distinct from one another. Katsuki curses, tries to lift his slightly-less-useless arm but only gets halfway there, exhaustion mixing with the medications in his system to render him even more incapable of comfort. Frustration eats at him as he grunts and tries again, somehow managing to smack his hand on the back of Eijirou’s palm. Even in his panic, Eijirou gets the message. He grabs onto it almost desperately, holds it close to his face as he tries to regain control of his breathing. It hurts even though he’s gentle with it, but Katsuki would rather cut off his tongue and eat it than let him know right now. Instead he runs his thumb over Eijirou’s hand and hopes that suffices; Eijirou would see straight through his bullshit if Katsuki tried to ease his worries, tell him it’s all over or convince him none of it has affected him. (It hasn’t sunk in just yet, the fact that he died back there. Whenever that happens it won’t be pretty, and he can only hope he's met with the same patience and understanding he's been granted up until now.) All he can do is hold Eijirou’s hand until he remembers how to breathe. He’s far from the only one who keeps forgetting lately. Eventually, the tremors die down. “Sorry,” Eijirou sniffles as he takes a few deep, experimental breaths. “That was– too far, and you’re still– I’m sorry.” “Don’t,” Katsuki frowns, and maybe the drugs are making him delirious but he’s more bothered by the possibility of Eijirou backtracking than by having him basically propose. “It’s– we’re fine. We’re okay.” Eijirou squeezes his eyes shut. It does nothing to stop the tears leaking from them. “Hey,” Katsuki nudges him until their eyes meet again. “I get it. It’s– you’re right, it’s a lot, but.” He taps his fingers on the back of Eijirou’s palm, one after the other. “It’s okay. We’re okay. Really.” Eijirou’s tears show no sign of slowing, but his breathing is finally steady again. “I guess I just– needed to get it out there.” He laughs, but there’s no humor in it. "I get it if it's too casual for someone who goes all out on everything." Katsuki considers the way Eijirou has made himself as small as possible in order to fit next to him on the tiny hospital bed, careful not to aggravate his injuries while having zero regard for his own. Thinks about how the first thing on his mind when Eijirou brought up them getting married was how young they are and not how they aren't even dating. He can't shrug, so he tilts his head a little. "Eh, I'm not nearly that romantic. Besides," he flicks weakly at Eijirou’s forehead, “spend the rest of eternity regretting– are you listening to yourself? What part of that was casual, you damn K-drama protag wannabe?” This does get a laugh out of him –soft and shaky, but a genuine laugh nonetheless– and Katsuki's chest doesn't hurt as much anymore. "Okay," he sighs as soon as Eijirou's laughter dies down, "let's do it. Let's get married." A sliver of light –tiny and hesitant but there– sneaks its way into Eijirou's eyes and Katsuki can’t imagine a single scenario in which he would turn him down. "Yeah?" Katsuki tightens his grip around Eijirou’s hand as much as his weak, broken body will allow. "Yeah.", "Think fast." In the split second it takes Eijirou to turn away from his punching bag and towards the door, the small object thrown at him has already made its way across the room and right into the palm of his hand– raised just in time, a mere inch away from his face. A thin chain dangles from his closed fist. And at the end of it, in the center of his palm when he opens it, a simple black band, cold and heavy, with a thin strip of glimmering orange running through the middle of its width. A ring. Katsuki just gave him a ring. He raises his head but whatever he had to say dies in his throat because there Katsuki is, staring at him with his brow furrowed and his jaw clenched and his nostrils flaring, and an identical black band hanging from a chain around his neck– except its stripe is instead a deep, burning red. Eijirou nearly chokes on air. "What?" "Promise rings." "Promise rings," he echoes, a little lightheaded. "And uh– why?" "There isn't a single place in Japan willing to officiate a marriage between high schoolers, so unless you have plane ticket money–" "You–” Eijirou stammers, “you looked it up?" "Obviously!" Katsuki exclaims, as if it really is obvious, and Eijirou’s heart is doing cartwheels in his chest. "It's such bullshit– we're old enough to fight a war but need our parents to sign some paper for us?" He scoffs, but his expression turns hesitant when his eyes meet Eijirou’s. "Unless you're chickening out now–" "No, never," Eijirou cuts him off, no longer fighting off the smile that spreads on his face. "That's what I thought." Katsuki’s attempt at nonchalance is contrasted by the relieved huff he lets out as he drops to the bed. "Anyway, I never wanted to give my mom too much free reign over my wedding so it's gonna have to wait until we can get it done ourselves." “Of course,” Eijirou laughs, certain he’s floating just an inch off the ground. He lifts his ring, letting it dangle from its chain. "And this?" Katsuki shrugs, looking away when Eijirou sits next to him. "Figured it would be a decent placeholder till then." It’s been weeks. Weeks since the war ended, weeks since their conversation in the hospital, weeks of panic attacks and nightmares and breakdowns and tears and push after push after push by parents and teachers alike for students to take advantage of newly established mental health support networks. Amidst all the chaos in their lives, Eijirou had assumed that Katsuki forgot about their talk– or was simply too high on pain medication at the time for it to have registered in his mind in the first place. Either way, Eijirou wouldn’t hold it against him. The fact that Katsuki considered it for even a second back there was enough. Or so he thought. Now, as he smiles down at the tangible proof that Katsuki not only remembered but listened, Eijirou isn’t at all surprised when the world blurs at the edges. “Shit,” Katsuki hisses, sitting up. “Look, I know I said that crap about chickening out but–” “Put it on me?” Katsuki blinks at him, eyeing the tears on his face. He sighs, shoulders loosening as he reaches for Eijirou’s ring. “Shoulda’ known you’d be a sap about it.” Eijirou chuckles, wiping at his face with one hand and lifting his hair away from his neck with the other. The ring settles on his sternum and with it so does a small piece of his heart. “How’s it look?” he asks, but when he looks up Katsuki is straining to keep his expression neutral. “Looks fine,” he rasps, clearing his throat and turning his face away. Eijirou’s eyes widen; a startled laugh escapes him. “Who’s being a sap now?” “Shut up, you started it,” Katsuki grumbles. “Now neither of us dies before we tie the knot." “If that’s the case…” Eijirou toys with his ring, already feeling like it’s an extension of himself, "then maybe we shouldn't get married for real until we're old and gray." The corner of Katsuki's mouth twitches in amusement. "You sure you can wait that long? You popped the question before the dust even settled." “Sure can,” Eijirou laughs, dangling his ring between them. “I have your word now, don’t I?” “Stupid,” Katsuki grabs it and yanks Eijirou forward until their foreheads bump together. “Screw my word; you got all of me, you hear? Get with the program or die.” The fire in Katsuki’s eyes burns brighter than it has in weeks. Eijirou basks in it, wrapping his arms around the other with a teary smile. “Get with the program,” he whispers, letting his eyes slip closed, “no dying allowed.” Katsuki’s arms wrap around him in return and –for a single moment– in the safety of this small bubble of warmth they made for themselves, a future where their every step isn’t shaky and uncertain feels somewhat more attainable.
